Captain William Beckerleg and his family

Last night, spent some happy hours looking into the Beckerleg family of Newlyn/Paul/Madron/Penzance. This came about through my recent interest in Francis Drew, as his sister Mary married the good sea captain. The most wonderful aspect of this little side track was the discovery of the magically named Barzillai Beckerleg, father of William. William also had a brother named Barzillai, and the census reveals the existence of another, possibly a cousin to Barziallai Sr., of the same name. A peek at Free BMD shows quite a few Barzillai Beckerleg names over the years. Seems that there was a number of Beckerleg families in the area.

Anyhow, it appears that William and Mary had no offspring (that showed in the census, at least).

More Beckerlegs
Using Google, one finds that the Beckerleg name has spread thinly all over the place. I found a Barzillai Beckerleg graduating LL.B . from Auckland University, NZ, in 1923, for example. The National Archives of Australia has 17 instances of the Beckerleg name, mostly enlistments in 1914-1918 and 1939-1945 but a couple of patents. Most of these seemed to be concentrated around Ballarat-Bendigo in Victoria.

And then there's Barzillai Beckerleg Bennetts, born 1893, known as "Barrie", a rugby player of some repute.
