The Mylor Mob

Today, an e-mail contact through Ancestry.com, someone researching Frederick Joseph DREW, born 1882.

Must be the right chap, because FreeBMD has no other Frederick Joseph DREW born in 1882 in all of the country, just this one in Falmouth District.

Anyhow, I await an answer to my response.
---------------------------------------------------------------------

False alarm! It seems that she was actually looking for Frederick Charles DREW, who appears to have been born and raised somewhere near Crediton, on the "wrong" side of the Tamar for our lot. Thelma has a Frederick Drew born 1856 who, I think, could be the uncle of the Frederick Charles Drew that Heather is looking for.

Strangely, this contact lives in the same general area of Auckland as Janet & Warren.

Drew Convicts from Cornwall

Ancestry.com.au has made available the convict registers, free for 10 days. So, being a nosey parker, I signed up for the free trial and had a peep. This is what I found:

Name: Edward Drew
Vessel: Mangles
Convicted Date: 22 Oct 1834
Voyage Date: 24 Apr 1835
Colony: Van Dieman's Land
Piece: HO 11/10
Place of Conviction: Cornwall
County of Conviction: Cornwall

Edward was sentenced to 7 years. He was convicted at Falmouth Second Sessions. On the original, he is bracketed with Robert Roberts.

Name: Peter Drew
Vessel: Fame
Convicted Date: 25 Mar 1816
Voyage Date: 9 Oct 1816
Colony: New South Wales
Piece: HO 11/2
Place of Conviction: Cornwall
County of Conviction: Cornwall

Name: Samuel Drew
Vessel: Fame
Convicted Date: 25 Mar 1816
Voyage Date: 9 Oct 1816
Colony: New South Wales
Piece: HO 11/2
Place of Conviction: Cornwall
County of Conviction: Cornwall

Peter and Samuel seemed to have some connection with William Mallet the Younger, as they are bracketed together on the original page. All three were sentenced to life, convicted at the Cornwall Assizes.

Now, where do we find out what they were convicted for, and were they connected in any way to our mob?

Another Cousin, and born a DREW to boot!

Thanks to Jayne for contacting me, at Linda's suggestion, with information on Alfred Drew who caused a little confusion a few days back.

To quote Jayne:

Unfortunately, we don't know a great deal about Alfred Drew - he was born on 05 Aug 1887 in Madron workhouse to Elizabeth Ellen Drew, a charwoman of Penzance, residing at 2 Custom House Lane, Penzance - as you already know, there is no father recorded. He died at the age of 30yrs, on the 23 Mar 1918 at 6 Regent Place, Penzance; he was a window cleaner at the time - he died of a cerebral haemorrhage and his mother, Elizabeth Ellen Drew (living at 7 Abbey Place, Penzance) was present at the death.

He married Elizabeth Fanney Davey & my grandfather, Alfred James Drew was born in 1915, but as he was only 3 when his father died, he had no real memory of him and so there were no clues to the unknown father. My grandfather married Dorothy Ellen Honour and they had 2 children, my Aunty Anne & my father, Michael James Drew. Unfortunately, both of my grandparents have passed away and so a lot of the family history has gone with them.

Now, to find out what happened to Alfred's siblings, Ernest and Sydney!

On the Paul War Memorial:
DREW, Ernest. Private. 391942. Labour Corps. Southern Command Labour Centre. Enlisted at Penzance. Died in England 24th October 1917. Interred in Paul Cemetery, Sheffield Road, Paul.

William Charles DREW, b. Sept Q 1848

If anybody has been wondering where this chap and his wife, Elizabeth Ann Hodge, got to between their marriage on 3 April 1870 and the 1871 Census (from which they are conspicuously absent), they migrated to Queensland. So, I have other Cornwall DREW connections here (somewhere), descendants of the surviving 8 of the 13 children of my 3rd cousin twice removed.

I am slowly going through the Queensland BMD 1829-1914 and the assisted immigration indexes trying to work out who the other Queensland Drews might be, and where they came from. Some are very obviously German, some are Irish, there was one born in the West Indies, another born in France.

Assisted Immigration Index
DREW Wm C 21 Indus 21 Jul 1870 IMM/114 6 M1697
DREW Elizabeth A 20 Indus 21 Jul 1870 IMM/114 6 M1697

Descendants - well, children at least.

Cornwall. William C Drew, son, 2, Cornwall Penzance

Cornwall. William C Drew, Son, 12, Scholar, Cornwall Penzance

William married Elizabeth Ann HODGE on 3 April 1870 in Penzance, Cornwall..(1) Elizabeth was born about 1850.(1)

Children from this marriage were:
+ 2 F i. Mary Ellen DREW was born in 1871 in Queensland.
+ 3 M ii. William Charles DREW was born in 1873 in Queensland.

Ernest Drew, nephew of John Carne Drew

I was searching the 1891 Census for an Ernest William Drew (born 1861, Camberwell, Surrey) who has no apparent connection to our lot. The reason I was searching is that Cousin Janet will go talking to strange men who happen to have Drew as a surname, and said strange man (Darryl Drew) rang me last night for a yarn about families and I was seeing what I could find out about his. Couldn't find any likely candidates, but just kept scrolling down and found this:

Ernest Drew, nephew, 2, born Penzance
and
Alfred Drew, nephew, 4, born Penzance in the household of John Carne and Rosina Drew at No.6 Customs House Lane in St Mary's, East part of Penzance.

Looking at the families of John Carne's siblings, I find I have no Alfred or Ernest as a child for any of them. Does anybody have an idea who might be the parents of these two boys?

A quick foray into FreeBMD gives me:
DREW, Ernest James, Penzance, 5c 247, December Quarter 1889
and
DREW, Alfred, Penzance, 5c 258, September Quarter 1887

Anybody want to chase the certificates? Looks like someone has to.

{Changed} Alfred and Ernest found here: Is this Elizabeth E Drew the daughter of John Carne Drew? If so, why, in 1891, were the boys described as "nephew" and not "grandson"?

1901 Census for St Mary's Penzance, 2 Abbey Place

Edwin Tredwin, Head, married, 47, Sailor Seas, Worker, Cornwall Penzance
Elizabeth E Drew, Boarder, married, 36, Charwoman, Worker, Cornwall Paul
Alfred Drew, Boarder, single, 13, Cornwall Penzance
Earnest J Drew, Boarder, 11, Cornwall Penzance
Sydney J Drew, Boarder, 7, Cornwall Penzance

Also in Abbey Place, at No.6
Susan Drew, Head, Married, 29, Cornwall Paul
William J Drew, Son, 3, Cornwall Paul
Emma J Drew, Daughter, 1 month, Cornwall Penzance.
