Captain William Beckerleg and his family

Last night, spent some happy hours looking into the Beckerleg family of Newlyn/Paul/Madron/Penzance. This came about through my recent interest in Francis Drew, as his sister Mary married the good sea captain. The most wonderful aspect of this little side track was the discovery of the magically named Barzillai Beckerleg, father of William. William also had a brother named Barzillai, and the census reveals the existence of another, possibly a cousin to Barziallai Sr., of the same name. A peek at Free BMD shows quite a few Barzillai Beckerleg names over the years. Seems that there was a number of Beckerleg families in the area.

Anyhow, it appears that William and Mary had no offspring (that showed in the census, at least).

More Beckerlegs
Using Google, one finds that the Beckerleg name has spread thinly all over the place. I found a Barzillai Beckerleg graduating LL.B . from Auckland University, NZ, in 1923, for example. The National Archives of Australia has 17 instances of the Beckerleg name, mostly enlistments in 1914-1918 and 1939-1945 but a couple of patents. Most of these seemed to be concentrated around Ballarat-Bendigo in Victoria.

And then there's Barzillai Beckerleg Bennetts, born 1893, known as "Barrie", a rugby player of some repute.

You will note that there are some 'gaps' in the birth dates, suggesting some neo-natal deaths. So, in Free BMD, I searched Births and Deaths in Sheppey District, from March Quarter 1878 to the current end of transcriptions. And this is what I found besides the known names:

Drew Gilbert, aged 0, Deaths Mar 1882 (A quick search found Gilbert born Dec 1881, Shepton Mallet, Somerset.)
Drew Rebecca, Births Mar 1886
Drew Rebecca, aged 0, Deaths Jun 1886
Drew Frank, Births Mar 1889 (From 1901 Census, probably the son of William and Mary E Drew, moved to Islington by 1901)

Drew Winifred Ivy, Births Mar 1899
Drew Winifred Ivy, aged 0, Deaths Sep 1899
Drew Annie Caroline E, Births Dec 1899 (From 1901 Census, the daughter of William J and Caroline S Drew. William J Drew was from Ireland)

Drew Violet Irene, Births Jun 1904
Drew Ruby Elizabeth, Births Sep 1904
Drew James Edward, Births Mar 1908
Drew Maria E, aged 67, Deaths Dec 1914

So it is obvious that there are other Drew families in Sheppey District, Kent, over these years. It is also obvious that there are some children whose births and deaths could fit comfortably into the time frame of the family of Francis and Louisa.

The OTHER Drew Family in Chermside

I have, for a while, been aware of the historical presence of another DREW family in this general vicinity. Dad's cousin Myrtle even mentioned one the other day; one Harry Drew, who was a baker in Chermside/Wooloowin.

Today, at the stupidmarket, I was doing my bit for the weekly shopping effort when I heard someone say "Hello Mr Drew, what are you doing here?". I looked around, but nobody was talking to me. I moved to the next aisle, and the owner of the voice was in conversation with an elderly chap. I introduced myself, of course, and had a long conversation with Michael Drew. He is the nephew of the baker, Harry. He also, as a lad during the war years, helped Roy Drew on Great-Uncle Bill's milk run around the area. So, the two Drew families knew each other. He also informed me that to differentiate between the two families, the locals called them the "English Drews" and the "American Drews" - the English lot arrived in Australia from Kent at about the time my mob arrived, around 1885.

Later: Decided to look through the Census information on Drew families in Kent, just for the hell of it. And what appeared? Frances Drew, born abt. 1841 in Penzance Cornwall, Shipwright at HM Dockyard, and his wife Louisa, born abt 1856, Walworth Surrey. I had previously seen that marriage (1873, Penzance) and wondered who the Francis Drew and Louisa Drew were that got married back then. Pending ordering of the marriage certificate, I am quietly confident that Francis and Louisa were first cousins once removed. Anyway, they produced a nice little family, and that makes more names to be followed up.

The OTHER Drew Family in Mylor

While searching out the little details of the descendants of Edward George Drew (Jr), I keep coming across another Drew family in Mylor. Sometimes, names are very similar, and I've nearly been caught a few times. Does anybody know anything of this other lot? I think I'll start a small Legacy file for them, to see if I can work out where they fit.

Martha Lucas Drew, of Mylor

Christine has sent me some more information on Martha L Drew, namely that she is buried with her parents in Mylor Churchyard. I have added the extra information into the Welcome Andrew entry. Chris says that the graves were somewhat overgrown when she visited.

Welcome Graham

Another Cousin Jack has accepted the invitiation to join in. Welcome Graham, my third cousin and first cousin to Chris and Janet.

Welcome, Andrew

Cousins Jack and Jenny, Andrew has accepted an invitation to join our little group. Andrew, I have done the necessary to make you a full member, so we are looking forward to seeing how you connect back to the youngest of the Edward George Drew individuals. I am presuming you are descended from Irene Jane, as that is the only child of EG The Third that I have been able to find so far.

From what I have been able to scratch up so far, the children of Edward George Drew, base son of Edward George Drew and Elizabeth Dingey, had 'interesting' lives. As I mentioned earlier, I have obtained the birth certificates of two children of the eldest daughter. My next purchase will be some marriage certificates to confirm some spouses' names.

I have a strong suspicion that one daughter married a Frenchman, and may have returned to France as they do not appear on any subsequent census (that I have been able to find, anyway). The marriage of EG III to "Jane" remains elusive.

The Mylor Drew branch begins to grow

It has been with some sadness that I haven't been able to make contact, so far, with a descendant of great-great-grandfather Edward George Drew's base son, Edward George Jr. Well, that has all changed as of this morning. In my Inbox, from Andrew:
What a wonderful tool Google is.
I am currently researching my family tree as a descendant of Edward George Drew and found your thread Drew family at British Genealogy through Google.
It would appear that my g-g Grandfather is Edward George Drew III (on your tree) born in Mylor 1862. I believe he ended his days in Torquay in Devon, as a gardener at one of the houses.
I had traced him as far back as John Reid in one straight line but with none of the background information that is obviously included in your thread, which my family have found very interesting. I do not have any information on brothers, cousins etc.
We did know that my Great Grandmother (who I believe died in the early 1950,s) used to write to someone is Australia but not who. I also know that my Great Uncle left for Australia in the early 1950's to return to England in the 1980's, but I do not know if this was connected to the family.
I would be really greatful to receive any information that you have on the family tree, ancestors and descendants.
Look forward to hearing from you."

Googling for "Edward George Drew" was how Chris found me, and now Andrew has repeated the trick. I have sent him a copy of the BIG .pdf file to keep him occupied, and will invite him to join our little Blog community. It's funny, but only yesterday we had a bit of a family get-together and I was telling my cousin and uncle about this particular branch of the DREW mob which contains our closest DREW relatives apart from Chris and her siblings and cousins

Another Connection to the Penlee Lifeboat

I trust everybody had a pleasant Christmas - New Year break.

An email from Richard Beamish this morning.

" .... looking at the Drew Blog, I see you have about the Penlee Lifeboat.
Nigel Brockman's mother-in-law was a Drew which means that Neil Brockman, the now Coxswain of the new Penlee Lifeboat, is a Drew descendant.
Neil was the man that the coxswain refused to take with them that night
All the best
Richard"

Very interesting.
